Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) will offer a number of projects to the private sector during the current year, Commercial Business Executive Manager Mohammed Al-Ghamdi told Argaam

He added that the projects of brine byproduct of desalination products and mobile plants are the first to be offered to investors.

The corporation’s project portfolio reached its highest level of SAR 50 billion by the end of 2023, Al-Ghamdi said, indicating that the portfolio includes projects for desalination plants, as well as transportation and storage systems affiliated with the station. This is carried out through SWCC or Wetico Co., which specializes in transportation systems.

SWCC’s extensive portfolio is under implementation, the official added.

The corporation is working to extract a number of minerals from brine as a part of the desalination process, Al-Ghamdi said. These minerals are of huge importance for the various industry sectors, with magnesium and the different bromine compounds among the important ones.

Bromine, the key element in the oil and gas industries, is entirely imported from outside the Kingdom, he disclosed.

The goal is to extract 10,000 to 13,000 tons annually in the first stage, representing about 25% of the local market need.

The second stage aims to cover all local needs and export the remaining, Al-Ghamdi said.
