Communications ministry structures principles for large-scale data centers in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) is working on structuring key business principles for large-scale data center development across the Kingdom, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The ministry planned to set up a strong and advanced digital infrastructure, in line with the digital transformation process and the implementation of new technologies across the Kingdom. This includes developing hyper-scale data centers, catering to the increasing demand for cloud services to enable Saudi Arabia become a leading digitalized center for computing powerhouse and digital hub for the region.

The ministry’s plan will likely accelerate the development of data centers across the Kingdom to exceed 1,300 megawatts (MW) before 2030, with potential investments of over $18 billion in data centers and renewable energy.

The ministry cooperated closely with the private sector, including local and global companies, to restructure the key guidelines for the data centers development. Gulf Data Hub, Al Moammar Information Systems (MIS), and Saudi FAS Holding Co. have worked with the ministry on developing plans to build large-scale data centers. More companies are expected to join the endeavor.
