Saudi Arabia eyes 5 mln pilgrims in 2030, says Makkah governor

Saudi Arabia will soon announce phases of the holy sites development project (Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah) and launch of the smart Hajj system as part of the Kingdom's vision to attract 5 million pilgrims in 2030, Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah, said in a press conference on Thursday.

 

Saudi Arabia launched a smart hajj initiative this year, and aims that all pilgrimage services will depend on this high tech going forward.

 

The total military and civil workforce stood at over 250,000 this year, Prince Khalid added.

 

A total of 360,000 pilgrims were transported by the holy sites metro line, while over 1.8 million pilgrims used 18,000 buses.

 

The Kingdom also welcomed Qatari pilgrims and launched an online portal allowing them to register for the Hajj, though Doha banned its citizens from performing pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, he said.
