Yamama Cement studying land use options after relocating plant: report

Yamama Cement Co.’s plant management has formed a committee to develop suggestions to use the land area of the factory after relocating to a new site, Riyadh newspaper reported, citing a company executive.

Production at the current plant will be wrapped up as commercial operations begin at the new plant, said Abdullah Al-Swailim, factory cement manager.

The total shutdown of the plant will coincide with the trial run of the new factory in Q2 2019 and launching commercial operations in Q1 2020.

Some of the hurdles facing the project include the delay in obtaining some due governmental permits, he added.

Riyadh’s higher environment committee in 2012 ordered to relocate Yamama Cement’s plant to another location outside the city’s urban area.

The cement producer signed an agreement in November 2015 with German industrial firm Thyssenkrupp to build two production lines at the firm’s new plant in Al Kharj at a total cost of SAR 2.7 billion. In February, 69 percent of the plant’s construction was completed.
