Saudi Arabia's cash-transfer scheme, Citizens Account, has said there is no relationship between the program and the selective tax imposed on tobacco, energy and soft drinks.
The Citizens Account allowances will be disbursed before “making any moves to change the prices of energy products,” the program said in response to citizens’ inquiries through its Twitter account.
The kingdom will begin levying on Sunday a 100 per cent tax on tobacco products and energy drinks and a 50 percent tax on carbonated soft drinks.
The Citizens Account Program is a cash-transfer scheme to help low- and middle-income Saudis.
