SABIC affiliate Al-Jubail Fertilizer Co. (Al-Bayroni) has become the first entity in Saudi Arabia to achieve carbon credits under the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme for one of its projects, SABIC said in a statement.
The credits will be issued later this month by the UN body, SABIC said.
The CDM scheme encourages the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.
The UN issued 53,000 carbon credits to match 53,000 tons of greenhouse gas emission savings in the first year of the Al-Bayroni CDM project.
Meanwhile, Yanbu National Petrochemical Company (Yansab), another SABIC affiliate, has successfully registered an energy-efficient plan at its Yanbu Industrial City complex as part of the CDM scheme in Saudi Arabia, the statement said.
