Ports Development Company, a subsidiary of Emaar the Economic City, has signed a joint venture agreement with Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) group to operate the first phase of roll on/ roll off hub (RO/RO) at King Abdullah Port.
The new RO/RO terminal, which will be operational by the third quarter of 2016, will be one of the largest such facilities in the world with a capacity of 1,500,000 CEU (container equivalent unit), the company said in a statement.
The RO/RO terminal is expected to help the automotive sector at King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) where companies like Abdul Latif Jameel, Naghi Group, Juffali Automotive Company, and Al Zahid Group operate.
Ports Development Company was established in 2010 as a joint venture between Emaar the Economic City, which developed KAEC and Huta Marine Works Company.
Japan-based NYK is a core Mitsubishi company.
