Saudi banks said to safeguard ATMs by satellite

22/04/2015 Argaam
A Saudi government tripartite committee has called on banks in the country to install satellite monitoring technologies to protect ATMs against theft and damage, state-owned Saudi Gazette has reported.

Banks will have one year to comply with the new measures, which also require the use of electronic chips and cameras inside the machines that can track money transporting vans and detect any early signs of theft or damage.

The committee included representatives from the Directorate of General Security, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, and the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA), the kingdom’s central bank.

SAMA, the police and security teams will be tasked with carrying out routine inspections. Any issues observed must be rectified by the banks in three weeks’ time .

It added that existing buildings housing ATMs should be solid to ensure the machines are protected, while others could be put inside steel kiosks to ensure security.
