Mobile subscribers in Saudi Arabia reached 53 million, with a market penetration rate of 171 percent last year, said Abdullah Al-Darrab, governor of the kingdom’s Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC).

"About 50 percent of the kingdom’s population uses tablets, while 80 percent use smart phones," he added in a CITC forum themed Mobility, Adoption, and Future Trends in Saudi Arabia.

By the end of December, mobile broadband users hit 29 million with a 94.5 percent penetration rate.

Fixed broadband subscribers reached 3 million with a penetration rate of around 43.2 percent; while internet users totaled 19.6 million with a penetration rate nearing 63.7 percent.

The kingdom last year eased procedures and regulations for telecom companies to enhance and protect competition, Al-Darrab said. Saudi Arabia is currently ranked among the top 20 telecom markets in terms of revenue worldwide, he added.
