New initiatives have increased productivity at Hadeed in Saudi Arabia
The local Hadeed Saudi Iron & Steel has identified four key areas that will both increase performance and sustainability at Saudi Arabia’s largest steel producer.
Hadeed, a subsidiary of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), is concentrating on reducing greenhouse gases as well as maximising the return it gets from water, gas and other materials used in the production of its steel.
Speaking at the Metal Bulletin Middle East Iron and Steel Conference in Dubai Ismail al-Sulby, general manager, long products business unit at Hadeed, said the initiative has been successful. “We have a big shortage of gas and water and we need to implement these sustainability initiatives.”
He added that Hadeed has lowered greenhouse gas emissions by 4 per cent, water usage has dropped by 4 per cent, energy intensity has dropped by 5 per cent and material utilisation has increased by 11 per cent.
The Metal Bulletin Middle East Iron and Steel Conference is being held between 9-11 December
