US President Donald Trump confirmed that the tariffs set to be imposed on imports from Mexico and Canada will take effect starting March 4.
"Tomorrow, a 25% tariff will be imposed on Canada and Mexico... The tariffs are designed to force our two neighbors to intensify their efforts to combat the fentanyl trafficking into the US,” Trump pointed out to reporters in the White House.
These tariffs were initially scheduled for early February, but Trump agreed to delay them for a month following preliminary agreements on border issues. However, today he stated that "there is no longer room for Mexico or Canada" to avoid the new tariffs.
Trump also added that he would impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods, on top of the 10% tariff he introduced last month.
