Oil prices extended losses today, Feb. 25, hitting their lowest levels this year, as proposed US tariffs on Canada and Mexico hurt the outlook for energy demand.

Brent crude futures for April delivery fell 2.35%, or $1.76, to $73.02 a barrel, after touching $72.70 during the session.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for April delivery dropped 2.5%, or $1.77, to $68.93 a barrel, after dipping to $68.68.

US President Donald Trump said on Feb. 24 that the tariffs on Canada and Mexico would go into effect next week after a 30-day deadline. The tariffs include a 10% tax on Canadian energy products.

The American Petroleum Institute's report on oil inventories is expected to be released on Feb. 26, ahead of the official data from the US Energy Information Administration, amid expectations of a rise in crude inventories by 2.5 million barrels.
