Container handling up 31% to 718,100 TEUs in January: MAWANI

Saudi ports saw a 31.13% increase in container handling, reaching 718,100 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in January, up from 547,620 TEUs in the same period last year.

 

In a statement, the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) said outbound containers surged 53.17% year-on-year (YoY) to 271,740 from 177,420 TEUs. Inbound containers also rose 39.63% to 293,778 TEUs from 221,396 TEUs in January 2024. However, transshipment containers declined 3.41% to 141,754 TEUs from 146,754 TEUs.

 

Total cargo throughput tonnage climbed 17% YoY to 27.62 million tons, compared to 23.7 million tons a year earlier. General cargo reached 1.4 million tons in January, while dry bulk and liquid bulk cargo stood at 4.8 million tons and 14.17 million tons, respectively.

 

Ports received 591,800 livestock heads in January, down 31% compared to 862,260 in the same month of 2024.

 

The maritime traffic rose 16% YoY to 1,094 ships in January. The number of passengers also increased 22.24% to 100,910 last month. Meanwhile, the number of cars increased by 10% YoY to 107,470.
