Nations remain far from achieving the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of their transition from fossil fuels, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Although countries agreed at the end of 2023 to triple renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade, the IEA’s analysis showed that only a few countries have taken concrete steps to meet the target so far.
Global renewable energy capacity may double only in developed countries, and nearly half have plans to double renewable energy installations by 2030.
Fatih Birol, Executive Director of IEA, said that the target is ambitious but achievable only if governments quickly turn promises into action plans.
He noted that countries worldwide have great opportunities to accelerate progress towards a safer and more affordable energy system.
