The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 8.81 billion in the week ended May 21, from SAR 9.32 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that 124.2 million transactions were processed in the week.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week, except for furniture, and, construction & building materials sectors, which rose by 2% and 1%, respectively.
Education sector saw the steepest decline by 19%, followed by clothing & footwear, and, telecommunications sectors by 9% and 8%, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on the restaurants & cafes sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.32 billion, representing 15% of total sales, followed by the food & beverage sector with SAR 1.31 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value, with nearly SAR 2.81 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.40 billion.
