OPEC+ approved a modest rise in its June oil output increase plan during its meeting today, May 5, amid high volatility amid concerns about oil supply from Russia.
Following the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee’s (JMMC) meeting, the group agreed to increase production by 432,000 barrels per day in June, in line with the OPEC-led oil output pact reached last year, according to a statement.
Fears over OPEC+ members not keeping pace with the planned monthly increases have mounted in the recent period, at a time when several oil-consuming countries are struggling to meet their oil supply commitments.
OPEC Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo had confirmed on Wednesday that some oil producers are bound to be pushed into a painful adjustment period when Russian oil imports are cut. He also warned against lowered oil demand from China amid tightening COVID-19 restrictions.
The decision to raise oil output comes as supply concerns took center stage with the European Union planning to phase out imports of Russian crude and refined oil in response to the Russia-Ukraine crisis, paired with calls from oil-consuming countries for OPEC+ to boost oil production to counter rising inflation.
The 29th OPEC and non-OPEC ministerial meeting is scheduled to take place on June 2.
