India begins anti-dumping probe into MEG imports

The Indian government started an anti-dumping probe into imports of mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE and Singapore, the country’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

The probe followed a petition from private-sector Indian producer, Reliance Industries (RIL), and was supported by India Glycols.

It will determine the dumping practices, its impact on the domestic industry, and the proposed duties, focusing on imports that took place between January and September 2019. It may also cover the period from 2016 until 2019.

The probe was initiated upon the damage caused to the domestic industry, as low-priced imports led to accumulated inventories and lower profit.

MEG is a major feedstock for the polyester industry and is used to produce PET fibres, PET films and resins.

India is the world's second-largest polyester producer after China with around 10 million tons per annum. The country produced around 7 million tons of polyester products in 2018.
