Saudi Electricity to provide PV solar energy services by mid-2018

Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC) will start supplying photovoltaic services to customers by mid-2018, according to a law issued by the Electricity Cogeneration and Regulatory Authority (ECRA).

An expert team is currently finalizing the project’s technical designs to launch in line with the world’s latest solar technologies and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 economic reform plans to reduce dependence on oil revenue, Abdullah Al-Bishi, Manager, Distribution Resources Planning Division, said in a statement Thursday.

Customers will be able to apply for the new service starting Sept. 17, 2017 via the utility’s website.

Qualified subscribers will have the solar system devices installed and linked to the national grid by July 1, 2018.

Al-Bishi said that specifications required to link the solar systems to the power grid will be developed and published later on.

SEC will provide digital meters to measure the generated and consumed solar energy, he added.
