SEC awards ABB $150 mln orders to boost Saudi power supply

ABB, a global supplier of hybrid substations, has secured $150 million worth of orders from Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC) to boost capacity at five existing substations in the kingdom, the Zurich-based company said in a statement.

The orders, which cover the design, supply, installation and commissioning of new switchgear bays at the stations, were said to have been booked in the second quarter of this year. ABB will also modify associated automation, control, protection and auxiliary power supply systems and connected transmission substations.

The move falls in line with Saudi Arabia's strategic plan to expand its power generation capacity by 50 percent over the next decade to meet rising demand from its growing population and commercial sectors.

The kingdom’s Central Region will see three stations upgrades, while both the Eastern and Western Regions will see will see one station enhanced.

ABB had previously been assigned to other projects across the country, including a $60 million order for 65 power transformers, which was won earlier this year.
