Meet Saudi Arabia’s new energy minister: Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman appointed earlier today Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the new Minister of Energy.

Prince Abdulaziz has been the state minister for petroleum affairs since 2017, after serving as an assistant minister from 2004.

In 1995, the newly appointed energy minister was named deputy oil minister, in addition to being an advisor to the oil and mineral resources minister (1987-1995).

He also worked as the manager of the Economic and Industrial Research Division at the Research Institute of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

Prince Abdulaziz led the oil ministry and Aramco’s team that set and updated the Kingdom’s oil strategy. He had a key role in setting the first OPEC approved strategy in 2005, along with being an active participant in all OPEC-related conferences and activities.

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister has held several positions on energy boards and committees, and played an important role in establishing the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center, as well as launching related initiatives and leading local and international energy delegations.

He is also a member of the board of governors for the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies, the Oxford Energy Policy Club, and the Institute of Petroleum. He is also the honorary president of the prestigious Saudi Arabian Economic Association.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman holds an MBA in Industrial Management from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.
